Predators now sit at 42 – First Round of Cuts

Welp, the preseason is in full swing and the Preds? Well, they haven’t found their mojo just yet.
They have played three games – two against the Florida Panthers and one against the Tampa Bay Lightning. All three resulted in a loss for Nashville.

But, as they say, preseason does not determine the outcome of the regular season – eh, sometimes.
We’d rather they find their problems now and eliminate them now, then wait until it really counts; the regular, effects-the-post-season season.

Anyways, we won’t dwell on the depressing preseason losses, but rather turn our attention to the recent roster cuts the Predators have made. It was bound to happen and some of the bright, up-coming faces have to pack their bags. Who were these kiddos? See below:

Reassigned back to their junior teams: Felix Girard (Baie-Comeau, QMJHL), Tommy Veilleux (Victoriaville, QMJHL) and Mikko Vainonen (Kingston, OHL).
Assigned to the Milwaukee Admirals: Taylor Aronson, Zach Budish, Anthony Bitetto,  Josh Shalla and Charles-Oliver Roussel
Released from tryout agreements: Allen York, Kayle Doetzel, Eric Levine, Barry Almeida, Paul Crowder, Michael Moffat, Sebastian Geoffrion, Teddy Ruth, Mathieu Tousignant, and Vinny Saponari. The Predators are holding steady at 42 – 12 defensemen, 25 forwards and 5 goaltenders. The Predators make their first appearance on home ice this Sunday against the New York Islanders at 5PM. We are hoping some familiar faces and that reassuring gold will calm their nerves.

BREAKING: NHL & NHLPA come to Agreement with IIHF & Olympics

20130719-113050.jpg

It’s official: NHL players will be allowed to participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, thanks to an agreement between the NHL & NHLPA and the IIHF & Olympic committee. The NHL will have an Olympic break between February 9th – 25th, with Team USA opening against Team Slovakia on Thursday, February 13th at 6:30AM. Team Canada will face off with Team Norway the same day at 11AM. This is the fifth consecutive Olympics the NHL has participated in since 1998 – so what’s the big deal on their agreement?

Well, the fact that it took them a bit longer than it should have and now they can finally release the 2013-14 regular season schedule! We will have it up for you once it’s available!

Matt Halischuk signs with Jets

No more happy Halischuk in Nashville…

While we were writing the Jonathon Blum post, we completely missed the announcement of now former Nashville Predator, Matt Halischuk signing with the Winnipeg Jets.

Like we mentioned in the Blum post, Halischuk is a diamond in the rough; he has potential, but he had a difficult time finding his niche while with the Preds. The Right Winger signed a one-year, two-way deal with Winnipeg this afternoon, which will pay him $650,000 on the NHL level and $250,000 on the AHL level.

But don’t be sad, Hally-faithfuls. With the new realignment, Halischuk won’t be going very far and you’ll see him more often than not as Winnipeg is sitting pretty in Conference B.

We wish you well, Halischuk!

Jonathon Blum to Minnesota?

Bye, bye Blummer?

Is Jonathon Blum headed North? Well, those are the rumors swirling this afternoon as the young defenseman who has been with Nashville his entire career begins seeking ice time elsewhere.

Blum has been iffy for Nashville, bouncing between the Predators and the Admirals in Milwaukee since being drafted by Nashville in the 2007 NHL Draft. There’s no surprise as to why Nashville did not extend an offer to Blum; he struggled while younger, thirstier players took charge, tossing Blum in the funk he eventually settled in. With only one goal and six assists in the 2012-13 season, Blum’s future amongst the rising defensemen in Nashville looked bleak.

But don’t count him out just yet. Although he has struggled with the Preds, Blum isn’t a terrible, get-out-of-the-NHL defenseman. Similiar to Halischuk, Jonathon Blum is a diamond in the rough that, unfortunately, just couldn’t quite shine here in the Music City.

The rumors state Blum is expected to sign a contract with the Minnesota Wild as early as tomorrow, but other teams, including the Flyers, have shown interest in him, as well. No matter who Blum chooses to sign with eventually, that said team will get a bargain and a potential goal-scorer. We suspect Blum will do well elsewhere, we are just disappointed it wasn’t here in Nashville.

We will let you know as soon as we hear word as to where Jonathon Blum eventually signs.

UPDATE:
As we expected, Jonathon Blum signed a one-year, two-way contract this morning with the Minnesota Wild. Like Halischuk, you will still get your Blummer fix. The Wild are in the same conference as the Nashville Predators.

Good luck, Blum!

Nick Spaling files for Salary Arbitration

Per his agent and the NHLPA’s website, Nick Spaling has filed for salary arbitration.
What does this mean?
NHL salary arbitration is a tool available to settle contract disputes. The player & team each propose a salary for the coming season, and argue their cases at a hearing if there is a dispute. The arbitrator, a neutral third party, then sets the player’s salary. A decision must be made within 48 hours of the hearing and when the decision is announced, the team has the right to decline, or “walk away” from the award. If the team exercises this right, the player can declare himself an unrestricted free agent.
Hearings will be held from July 22 to August 6th.

Uh oh. Apparently, Nick Spaling was not happy with his proposed salary. Will this be the last of Nick Spaling with the Preds?

Seth Jones signs first Pro Contract

Source: Jamie Squire/Getty Images

Well, he fell to fourth in the draft, so did you honestly think Nashville would not sign the 18-year-old star defenseman? Of course not! At 12pm on the dot today, Seth Jones and the Preds sat down to confirm his commitment in writing with a three-year, entry-level contract. The base salary of the contract is $925,000, with maximum rookie contract signing bonuses giving him a salary cap number of $3.225 million. We assume that Jay-Z (his agent) approved of this, though there was no word of his attendance this afternoon.

Jones will be donning the No. 3, which has displaced a few Wade Belak fans. Though he was close to many hearts in Nashville and the NHL abroad, Belak had retired before he passed and Nashville did not retire his number nor have the discussion with the public as to whether it should be. Minnesota’s newest signee from Pittsburgh, Matt Cooke, actually contacted Derek Boogaard’s parents in regards to wearing the late enforcer’s number 24 who died just two months before Belak. Are we saying Jones should contact Belak’s late wife and ask permission to wear a number he’s always worn and just so happens to be associated with a lost enforcer? No, not at all. It is not his duty to do so and we are betting Jones’ has no idea that he’s stepping into a number held by greatness.

Again, no surprise that Nashville was quick to have Jones commit to the organization and put him in a jersey. Per some, the look on David Poile’s face was sheer joy as Jones signed his contract. We can’t blame him. Jones will be huge.

Preds sign Hendricks, Hutton & Nystrom

20130705-140032.jpg

The Preds are signing faster than I can post!In addition to nabbing Stalberg and Cullen, Nashville has also added goalie Carter Hutton,  center Matt Hendricks and Left Winger Eric Nystrom to their list of new names.

Goalie Carter Hutton has been spending his days on the AHL level with the Rockford IceHogs, but was called up for one game during the playoffs with the Blackhawks. Will he be the immediate backup for Peks? We aren’t 100% sure but Poile was able to sign him to a one-year, two-way contract worth $550,000 on the NHL level, $100,000 on the AHL level.

Matt Hendricks, on the other hand, is familiar with the Nashville Predators organization. Drafted 131st overall in the 4th Round of the 2000 NHL Draft, it was Nashville that claimed the youngin’. Unfortunately, after taking a stab at college, Hendricks turned down a contract offered from Nashville and bounced around from team to team until finally settling with the Washington Capitals. He finally returned to the Preds for a contract worth four years, $1.85 million.

Last signee of the day is Left Winger Eric Nystrom of the Dallas Stars. The Predators were able to acquire the veteran for a four-year, $2.5 million contract.

Nashville is racking up with Forwards, but are they finished for today? We don’t think so. So much for us being productive on this rainy day at work…

Preds sign Stalberg & Cullen

20130705-131509.jpg

Looks like Predators have broken the ice on this first day of Free Agency. While other teams attacked with full force, Nashville sat back for a moment before taking the leap for Right Winger Viktor Stalberg from the Chicago Blackhawks. Just fresh off his recent Stanley Cup win, maybe the momentum will still be there when he suits for the Preds? We are hoping so because David Poile just signed the Swede to a 4-year, $12 million contract.

Just announced deal is Matt Cullen (no relation to Edward – I so funny, eh?), a 36-year-old Center from the Wild for two years, $7 million. He’s a bit under the radar, but what we do know is that this guy outscored everyone of Nashville’s current forwards… Yea…

We’ll keep you updated as the players get signed… or not signed.

2013 NHL Draft Review: The First Five

20130702-115043.jpg

The NHL held their long awaited draft on Sunday afternoon in Newark with hundreds of young kids hoping to hear their names called over the speakers. Seven Rounds stood between those kids and the chance of a dream and ten picks stood between Nashville and theirs; did everyone aim high enough?

There are mixed feelings running amongst the Predators fan base since Sunday’s No. 4 pick; some frustrated that Nashville nabbed the top defenseman in the draft and others absolutely elated by the steal. Offense! Isn’t that what David Poile promised us? As much as Nashville needed to use their first pick (No. 4 overall) for one of the top offensive players the 2013 Draft had to offer, the Predators would have been marred by not grabbing Seth Jones who, projected to go No. 1 overall to the Colorado Avalanche, fell into their laps.

The Predators pride themselves on being one of the top defensive teams in the league, so there was no doubt Poile was ready to slap that ‘JONES’ nameplate on the back of that jersey when he wasn’t drafted first, second, or third. Nashville will just have to reap the repercussions of their draft later on, whether it be for their benefit or their demise.

SETH JONES – Defense – 1st Pick (4th, 1st Round) –
By now, you’ve probably begun to hear his name in your sleep, but there’s a lot to Seth Jones more than just his famous NBA player/coach father, Popeye Jones… and that his agent is rapper Jay-Z. Seth began his road to hockey stardom when he was eight-years-old, joining travel teams and learning from be best and brightest that Denver had to offer. It was love from there – from the Everett Silvertips to the Portland Winterhawks, three years on the USA Junior team to being named a top draftee in the 2013 Draft, just the mention of those few examples are just scratching the surface with Jones. This past season with the Winterhawks, Jones put up 56 points, with 14 goals and 42 assists. Although that would differ on a higher professional level, Jones has the build and stamina to compete with the big boys. In an interview after the Draft, David Poile briefly touched on the possibility of Jones jumping straight into the Gold instead of traditionally taking time with Milwaukee. Some are even calling the young gun the answer to all of Nashville’s Suter problems, leaving Roman Josi to twiddle his thumbs. However, both Shea Weber and Seth Jones play right, so transitioning Weber and Jones into a duo would take time, but from our understanding, Jones is ready to take whatever means necessary to lace up for some prime-time ice.

Jonathan-Ismael Diaby – Defense – 2nd Pick (64th, 3rd Round) –
6’5″, 230lbs – this kid is possibly a Hal Gill protege, who has now been placed on waivers as of July 2nd. Diaby is a seasoned fighter, favoring our old pal, Jordin Tootoo (we’ll forgive him). A member of the Victoriaville Tigers since 2010, Diaby had an overall of 26 points this past season, with four goals and 22 assists. A sturdy-built defenseman, it seems like Diaby will be a good fit with Nashville down the road. The Predators’ second pick was an overall well-selected one.

Felix Girard – Center – 3rd Pick (95th, 4th Round) –
Though he was undrafted his first year of eligibility, Girard put up some draft-worthy numbers in the 2012/13 season with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Described as a “anything to win” type of player, Girard seems like a good fit for Nashville and definitely a tight fit for Milwaukee. Reminiscent of Gabriel Bourque, I have a feeling we will see Girard in the NHL before too long.

Juuse Saros – Goalie – 4th Pick (99th, 4th Round) –
Future backup to Pekka Rinne? We think so – or maybe even a possible replacement. If you can’t tell by the name, Saros is, in fact, from Finland and with the way that country tends to produce top goalies, Nashville may have found a diamond in the rough. Though only 5’10”, what he lacks in height and length, Saros makes up for in agility, athleticism, and speed. We have an undoubted notion that this kid will be one of many that sneak past those NHL Scouts and proves his worth – similar to what Peks has done.

Saku Macnalanen -Left Wing – 5th Pick (125th, 5th Round) –
Another young Scandinavian, Macnalanen is kind of a “out of nowhere” draft pick. From what we’ve gathered, he’s an all-around utility player that kind make his presence known in just about every position (maybe not goalie…). Penalty Kills are his thing, which could benefit the Predators farther down the road. The Preds’ Finnish Scout, Janne Kekalainen said he thinks the kid could eventually be a top Forward in the league. Eh, we’ll take that possibility.

So there are your first five selections from this year’s draft.
The Predators Development Camp will be held July 9th – 13th and is open to the public so if you want to see what these kids are made of in person, get out to Centennial Sportsplex from 8:30 to 1pm.

We will have the remaining five draftees posted here shortly!
